Day 6: Mexican time

I forgot to set my alarm last night. I woke up to the dog barking, looked at the clock, and had just enough time to rinse off, get dressed, and run down for breakfast with 5 minutes to eat before I was to be picked up. I told my host mother what happened and she just shrugged and said "Eh, es temprano (it's early)". I love Mexican time.

On the professional side of things, I went to a CAM, which is a school for students with disabilities (inclusion is a fairly new concept down here). The bad news is that we didn't get to meet with the principal, psychologist, or anyone else. It was the day of the Mother's Day program, so everyone was busy. Which made for an interesting morning, because it let us see the entire population and what their abilities were. A large percentage of the students were hearing impaired, with other possibly learning disabled or with mental retardation, and many others it was unclear. It was a joy seeing them perform for their mothers. Next week I will get to see another CAM and learn more about the system.

On the cultural side of things, language class consisted of discussing the role of teachers in Mexico past and present, and culture class was cumbia lessons. The evening we went on one of the tours that is done downtown where actors share the legends of the city.

I am still loving my new lifestyle. Vivina and I found a little park nearby where we want to sit and do our homework. Sunday I want to visit the Alameda, the biggest park, but for now this will do. I am starting to think about how to carry what I am learning here into my real life, but I'm not sure that I'm quite ready to deal with my real life yet.

Time to rest, so tomorrow I can enjoy my first trip outside the city to Bernal, where I will climb the second-largest monolith (aka big rock) in the world. Yes, me. It's gonna be awesome.

Careful on Penia (I don't have a tilde...). I almost passed out from the increase in elevation! But it's a wonderful view and a good climb. Enjoy!
